There’s something special about spending a couple of hours at an art fair — the buzz of creative energy, the chance to meet the artists behind the work, and the possibility that you might discover a painting that really speaks to you. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned collector, here are some simple tips to making the most of an art fair.
1. Trust your gut

Art is personal. If something catches your eye and makes you feel something — curiosity, joy, calm, excitement — pay attention to that. You don’t need to be an expert or know exactly why you like it. Often, your first instinct is the best guide when it comes to choosing art.
2. Don’t be afraid to chat to the artists
Art fairs are one of the few places where you can meet the people who created the work face to face. Most artists are very happy to talk about their process, inspiration, and materials. If you’re thinking of buying but need more time to decide, make sure you express your interest and get the artist's details. You could also ask whether they offer payment plans or could bring the piece to your home so you can see how it looks in situ. You might be surprised at how flexible they can be. 3. Know your space
If you’re buying for a particular wall or room, take a few quick measurements before you head to the fair. It’ll make it much easier to visualise how a piece might fit. You could even bring a photo of the space on your phone for reference — it’s a simple trick that can help you imagine the art in your home.

4. Ask about framing
Love the painting but not the frame? Don’t let that put you off. Many artworks are available unframed, or the artist may be able to suggest alternative options. Framing is personal, and changing it can make a big difference to how a piece feels in your home.
5. If you don’t find “the one”...
Sometimes you’ll fall in love with a painting on the spot. Other times, you might leave without finding the perfect piece — and that’s absolutely fine. Many artists take commissions and would be happy to create something especially for you. Alternatively, join their mailing list or newsletter so you can see new work as it’s released. Often, people find the painting a few months later, once they’ve seen more of an artist’s style.
6. Take your time (and enjoy yourself!)
Art fairs aren’t just about shopping — they’re about inspiration, connection and enjoyment. Grab a coffee, have a wander, soak up the atmosphere. If a piece stays on your mind as you stroll around, that’s usually a sign it’s worth a second look.
And remember: there’s no pressure to buy on the spot. The best purchases often happen after a little time to think (and another lap of the fair!).
Visiting an art fair is a wonderful way to explore new styles, discover emerging talent, and find pieces that truly resonate with you. So go with an open mind, chat to the artists, and most importantly — enjoy the experience.
Be sure to hear which art fairs I'll be at by signing up to my mailing list (which is also a great place to hear about new paintings, commission openings and my creative inspiration). And if you come along to one, do find me to say hello - I'd love to meet you!
